New York on screen: six walks to the real places

The Friends building, the Ghostbusters firehouse, Carrie’s stoop and the Plaza from Home Alone 2 — 53 film and TV locations you can actually stand in front of, grouped into six walks with the subway stop for each.

We say which ones are someone’s front door, which ones you can walk into, and which famous ones have closed, so you don’t cross town for a dry cleaner.

The short answer

The most-visited film locations in New York are the Friends building at 90 Bedford St, Carrie Bradshaw’s stoop at 66 Perry St, the Ghostbusters firehouse at 14 N Moore St in Tribeca, Katz’s Deli on Houston St and the Plaza Hotel. All five are free to see from the street.

The West Village walk covers Friends, Sex and the City and the Cosby Show in about two hours. Central Park has more film locations than anywhere else in the city — Bethesda Fountain, Bow Bridge and Gapstow Bridge are all on one morning’s walk. Many famous doors are private homes: look from the pavement.

The walks

Don’t go

Filmed here, but private, closed or unsafe. Not on any of our routes.

Places to leave off your list

  • Stoops and front steps. Carrie’s stoop, Miranda Priestly’s steps and Holly Golightly’s door are people’s homes. The city approved a gate at 66 Perry St in 2025 because fans kept climbing it.
  • Inside working buildings. The Ghostbusters firehouse and the Brooklyn Nine-Nine precinct are in service. Look from the pavement opposite.

Manners

Stay on the pavement

At 90 Bedford St people stand in the road for the photo. Cross to the opposite corner instead.

Don’t write on walls

The Friends building has cameras and signs because fans kept leaving quotes on the brick.

Be quick on the stairs

The Joker stairs are a commute. Take the photo and step aside.

Buy something

Katz’s, Magnolia, Tom’s and Gray’s Papaya are working businesses, not sets.

How this page was made, and who made it

We read film-location sites, the official pages for every paid stop, local press and the itineraries people share publicly, then checked each address against at least two of them in October 2026. Lists and maps other people made were used to see which places come up again and again — none of their writing is copied here.
