Free Events in New York City

A lot of what is free in New York repeats on a fixed night, so you don't have to catch it on one date. The museum rhythm is the easiest to plan around: UNIQLO Friday Nights at MoMA (5:30–8:30 PM, free for New York State residents with a reservation), Poster House free every Friday and on the third Sunday of the month, Community Free Wednesdays at the New York Botanical Garden for city residents, Late-Night Summer Wednesdays at the Museum of the City of New York (free until 9 PM), and Cooper Hewitt's pay-what-you-wish hour from 5 to 6 PM every day. Pioneer Works opens the whole building free on the second Sunday of each month.

The outdoor rhythm runs from spring to early autumn and costs nothing at all: Bryant Park has juggling at noon on weekdays, board games Tuesday to Saturday, the Reading Room daily from 11, Monday movie nights on the lawn and Picnic Performances most evenings through mid-September; Socrates Sculpture Park runs Sunday morning yoga and Tuesday sunset meditation; Randall's Island has Saturday-morning and Tuesday-evening yoga; the Lena Horne Bandshell in Prospect Park runs free concert nights. Add the free birding walks — Bryant Park, Governors Island on Saturdays at 2:15, Gabriel Willow's Central Park and Prospect Park walks — and the free public fishing at Pier 51 and East River Park.

Then there is the largest free category on the site, which people often don't think of as an event: volunteer days. The Billion Oyster Project runs public shifts Tuesday to Saturday at the Battery Maritime Building, and the Gowanus Canal Conservancy, Newtown Creek Alliance, Bronx River Alliance, Queens Botanical Garden, Prospect Park Alliance, Randall's Island and Earth Matter on Governors Island all run standing weekly shifts. Free here means no ticket and no admission charge, read off the venue's own listing by a person. It does not mean walk-up: several of the best free things in New York cap numbers, so “free · registration required” or “free · RSVP” is written on the card where it applies, and the volunteer shifts often fill a week ahead. It also does not quietly include free with admission — where a talk or a drop-in drawing session is free once you have paid to get into the museum, the card says exactly that. Free for residents only — MoMA's Friday nights, NYBG's Wednesdays — is labelled too, because it matters at the door.
