A non-profit art school inside the Snug Harbor Cultural Center, running ten-week adult terms in ceramics, stained glass, printmaking, painting and sculpture alongside children's classes and summer camps. It is the only place on Staten Island that teaches this range under one roof.

A daytime class rather than an evening one, which on this list makes it unusual — nearly everything else Art Lab teaches to adults runs after work. Intaglio & Monotype Printmaking

Etching plates and one-off monotypes on Art Lab's presses, taught by Robyn Tang across ten weeks from 21 September at $410. Intaglio is the technique almost nobody teaches to beginners, because it needs a press and an acid room; Art Lab has both, which makes this the most serious printmaking on the island. One caution: the studio's own catalogue prints the class as Monday in the title and start date but as Thursday in the times line — confirm the night before you pay. Ferry, then the S40.

Ceramic Techniques

Ten weeks at the wheel and the handbuilding table at Art Lab, the art school inside Snug Harbor and the only place on Staten Island teaching ceramics on a full term. The Fall term runs from 21 September in three separate sessions — Monday morning, Monday evening and Wednesday evening — so the $400 buys thirty hours of studio time rather than a single sitting. It is the cheapest hourly rate for tutored clay anywhere in the five boroughs, which is what an island with one art school and no competition looks like. Stained Glass Techniques

Cutting, foiling and soldering coloured glass across ten Tuesday evenings at Art Lab — the only stained glass class we track outside Brooklyn, and the reason this listing is worth the ferry. The term starts 22 September, 6:30 to 9:30 pm, at $400 for thirty hours. Glass is unusual among crafts in that a beginner finishes with something that genuinely works on a window, which is why the class fills. Staten Island Ferry, then the S40 bus.

The Painting Studio

Art Lab's longest adult session and its most expensive — three hours every Wednesday afternoon for ten weeks, $470, from 23 September. It is a studio rather than a course: you bring the work you are already making and get the room, the light and an instructor when you want one. Printmaking, What a Relief!

Relief printing — lino, woodcut, and anything else you can cut a shape into — with Keri Sheheen across ten Wednesday evenings from 23 September, $395. Relief is the cheapest printmaking to carry on with at home once the term ends, which is the honest argument for starting here rather than with intaglio. Ceramic Handbuilding and Small Sculpture

Eight Thursday evenings of pinching, coiling and slab work at Art Lab in Snug Harbor — no wheel, which is the point. Handbuilding is where most people find they can actually make the thing they pictured, and small sculpture is the natural next step from a pot. The term starts 24 September at 6:30 pm and runs eight weeks rather than the usual ten, so it finishes before the holidays. Ferry, then the S40 bus.

Ceramic Open Studio

Ten Saturday mornings of unsupervised bench time at Art Lab for $270 — the cheapest standing studio access we have found in New York, and by a distance. There is no instructor: this is for people who have already done a term and want somewhere to work, which on Staten Island otherwise means building a studio at home.
