Thursday afternoons at the Conservancy's nursery in the Old American Can Factory, sowing seed, potting up and labelling the native plants that end up in Gowanus street beds and rain gardens. Free. Newcomers need to attend an orientation shift first, and closed-toe shoes are required; under-14s must bring an adult. Dates are booked through the Conservancy's own portal rather than published on the page.

Rain Gardens volunteer shifts

Three hours on select Fridays tending the rain gardens that keep stormwater out of the Gowanus Canal — planting, weeding, removing invasives and amending soil. Free, training provided, closed-toe shoes required. Sites vary, so the meeting point comes with your registration.

Street Trees volunteer sessions

Select Saturday mornings clearing, weeding and mulching Gowanus street tree beds — litter out, compost in, soil aerated. No experience needed and training is given on the day; pruning is reserved for certified Citizen Pruners. Free, closed-toe shoes, under-14s with an adult.
